Test of Combat Skill
"Jedi use their powers to defend and protect."
Day: 2
Time: Mid Afternoon
Location: Training Hall - Tower of First Knowledge, Jedi Temple (Coruscant)
To test how much you've learned, the teachers put you to the test in a sparring match, using Training Lightsabers. But they do allow you to choose how difficult you want the challenge to be...
Choose one of the following Difficulties: Easy, Average, Hard.
GM Note: All Lightsaber rolls use Brawn or the corresponding Characteristic for those who have Talents that let them use a different Characteristic.
--------------------------------------------------
Easy: Protect the younglings!
Two younglings will be assigned to you to protect, and you must defend them from the attacks of Knight Farissa or Knight Corvin until the time has run out.
Step 1: Get Ready!
You may either roll Warfare (Intellect) or Perception (Cunning) against Average difficulty (◆◆) to quickly assess the tactics and fighting style of your opponent. If you possess the Sense Force Power, then you may add a Force die to the roll (using Light Side pips as usual for Success or Advantages).
Success, or a failure with 4 Advantages, will grant you a Boost die on your rolls in Step 2.
3 Threats will give you a Setback on your rolls in Step 2.
A Triumph will grant you a single free upgrade (turning a green to yellow) to a roll in Step 2, while a Despair will upgrade your Difficulty (turning a purple to red).
Step 2: Fight!
Three times, roll your choice of Brawl (Brawn), Melee (Brawn), or Lightsaber against Easy difficulty (◆), but with one Setback because of the erratic movements of the younglings behind you.
Talents that increase your Melee Defense or upgrade attacks against you grants a Boost die to your rolls, as do bonuses for facing a single opponent. Talents that increase the Melee Defense of allies removes the Setback caused by the younglings. Each successful roll means you hold off the attacker successfully, while a failed roll means one of the younglings take a small hit (each youngling can take a total of two hits before they pretend to be knocked out).
For every 2 Advantage generated, you can add a Boost to your next roll, while every 2 Threat generated adds a Setback to next roll.
A Triumph can be used to make a failed roll into a success, or upgrade your next roll.
A Despair will be a direct hit to one of the two younglings (in other words, they get a tap from the training saber and they fall down to pretend they're knocked out).
If both younglings are knocked out, you have failed.
Step 3: You win?
If both of the younglings are still standing, you successfully pass the test. The two younglings will be particularly impressed with you and will have a surprise to give you!
--------------------------------------------------
Average: One on One Duel
Master Jaric or Master Orgus are ready to test your skills and how well they stand up in single combat with a master. Choose your opponent wisely and see how well you last until time runs out...
Step 1: Get Ready!
GM note: both of these matches count as facing a single opponent for the purposes of Talents.
You may roll Vigilance (Willpower) or Cool (Presence) against Average difficulty (◆◆) with one die upgraded (turning one purple to red). If you have the Juyo Berserker Specialization (when facing Master Jaric) or the Soresu Defender (when facing Master Orgus), you do not upgrade the difficulty on this roll.
If successful, you may downgrade the difficulty of your rolls in Step 2 by one.
3 Advantages will give you a Boost die on your rolls in Step 2, while 2 Threats will give a Setback die on your rolls in Step 2.
A Triumph will grant you a single free upgrade (turning a green to yellow) to a roll in Step 2, while a Despair will upgrade your Difficulty (turning a purple to red).
Step 2: Fight!
(Note, both of these matches count as facing a single opponent for the purpose of Talents)
Master Jaric: Three times, roll Lightsaber against Average difficulty (◆◆) with one die upgraded (turning purple to red) and one Setback. After each roll, you take 6 Strain (Soak applies as normal) as you withstand Jaric's relentless attacks.
Each successful roll is a successful hit.
Advantages can either be used to recover Strain (trading 1 Advantage for 1 Strain), or for every 2 Advantage generated you can instead choose to add a Boost to your next roll, while every 2 Threat generated adds a Setback to next roll.
A Triumph can be used to make a failed roll into a success, or upgrade your next roll.
A Despair will downgrade your next roll, and suffer 1 Strain.
Master Orgus: Three times, roll Lightsaber against Average difficulty (◆◆) with two dice upgraded (turning purple to red) and two Setback. After each roll, you take 4 Strain (Soak applies as normal) as you withstand Orgus' well-placed strikes.
Step 3: You win?
If you are still standing after the third strike, or you succeeded in hitting three times, then you successfully pass the test. Master Orgus and Master Jaric praise your skill, and reward you with becoming their assistant instructor in lightsaber lessons for your fellow students the next day (yay, work)! And a useful item.
--------------------------------------------------
Hard: One Against Two!
For those who truly wish to show off, it isn't enough to face just one of the masters. However, not even the Masters will give the students the unfair fight of facing both Jaric and Orgus at once, so Jaric teams up with Corvin, while Orgus teams up with Farissa. Everyone watches with baited breath...
Step 1: Get Ready!
You may roll Perception (Cunning) or Vigilance (Willpower) against Hard Difficulty (◆◆◆) to avoid being completely outmaneuvered by your opponents. If you possess the Sense Force Power, then you may add a Force die to the roll (using Light Side pips as usual for Success or Advantages).
GM note: both of these matches count as facing multiple opponents for the purposes of Talents.
Jaric & Corvin: The challenge is to endure long enough against the rapid and relentless attacks of these two fighters until time is called.
Three times, roll your choice of either Resilience (Brawn) to soak through as much of the damage as possible, or Lightsaber to parry and deflect the incoming attacks. The difficulty is Hard (◆◆◆) with one upgraded die and two Setback.
After each roll, you suffer 7 Strain (Soak applies as normal), even if successful.
On a failed roll, suffer an additional 2 Strain.
Each Threat generated causes 1 more Strain, while each Advantage generated heals 1 Strain.
A Triumph can be used to make a failed roll into a success, or upgrade your next roll.
A Despair will downgrade your next roll, and suffer 1 Strain.
Orgus & Farissa: The challenge is to penetrate their strong defenses before time is called, and not be brought down by them before that.
Three times, roll Lightsaber to attack Orgus and Farissa. The difficulty is Hard (◆◆◆) with two upgraded dice and one setback.
After each roll, suffer 5 Strain (Soak applies as normal), even if successful.
Each successful roll is a successful hit.
Step 3: You win?
If you are still standing after time is called when facing Jaric and Corvin, or managed to last at least two hits on Orgus and Farissa, then you pass the test and greatly impress everyone! The teachers commend you for having learned so well, and you'll be asked to instruct your peers sometime in the coming days. Orgus and Jaric also have a personal reward to give to those who manage to pass this test.

Much like the previous day, Eir found herself slow to start, unable to strike Master Orgus in the first two rounds. True to the Soresu form, however, she defended herself well, keeping the Master's own lightsaber at bay.
Going into the third round, Eir flicked that loose curl off her forehead and adjusted her grip on the training saber. It hummed quietly, much more subtly than a full powered one would. She had one last chance to impress, to prove that she belonged in these trials. Her palms were sweating, that was why she had wrapped her hands before starting. Force guide me, she reached out with her senses, letting that awareness into her mind, like taking a deep breath, like diving into deep, pure water.
Master Orgus circled, drawing his blade up in a sharp diagonal strike, aimed for her hip. Eir twisted out of the way, and there it was, the opening she needed. His blade was still in the high guard, and she was short. She ducked forward, bobbing underneath the end of his blade, and landed a solid hit, the low-powered blade thumping soundly against his abdomen. With a full lightsaber, it would have been a thoroughly decisive blow.
The movement had thrown her off-balance, almost stumbling through the unfamiliar footwork, twisting her left ankle and right knee; but the pain was fleeting, and she quickly found her guarded stance once again. Just like that, the round was over, the test was done. The petite half-arkanian straightened and bowed her head respectfully to Master Orgus.

The Test of Combat. It was the one that Zizzy had been most nervous about and she decided on balance that it was probably better to get it out of the way first.
As a very basic practitioner there was no way she was going to try for anything other than the basic "Protect the Younglings" trial. As it turned out she was assigned Halo and Riko, the Duros and Togruta kids from the previous day's market adventure.
"Okay kids, try to stay behind me and hopefully this'll all work out." She gripped her saber and extended her senses to assess their attacker. Her tendrils picked up on his intentions but she still had a hard time stopping him from breaking through her defenses.
The first attack managed to clip Halo on the shoulder. As she adjusted to the opponent's tactics he switched to Riko, catching her in the side. Despite Zizzy's best efforts Halo took another tap in the final bout, but this time her form and positioning was much better. As the opponent clipped Halo for a second time, Zizzy whipped out a stimpack with her free hand and pretended to inject him with a dose. "If all else fails at least I'm using my initiative Masters."
She gave the two Younglings a weak smile, feeling disappointed in her performance but knowing it was probably her worst skill. Orgus would probably say it was her best opportunity for growth.
---------
D2. Test of combat. Easy! Protect the Younglings. Part 1. Average Perception (Cunning).: 2eP+1eA+1eB+2eD 3 successes, 1 threat

D2. Test of combat. Easy! Protect the Younglings. Part 2 - Fight. Easy Lightsaber(Brawn). +Boost + Setback.: 1eP+1eA+1eB+1eD+1eS 0 successes, 1 advantage

D2. Test of combat. Easy! Protect the Younglings. Part 2 - Fight#2. Easy Lightsaber(Brawn). +Boost + Setback. Destiny flip: 2eP+1eB+1eD+1eS 0 successes, 2 advantage

D2. Test of combat. Easy! Protect the Younglings. Part 2 - Fight#3. Easy Lightsaber(Brawn). +2Boost + Setback.: 1eP+1eA+2eB+1eD+1eS 0 successes, 3 advantage

Zizzy uses the three advantage to swiftly "stimpack" the first Youngling.
One Youngling still standing

Mir asked to face Master Jaric, carefully eyeing the tall jedi as the two circled each other. The young farghul raised his dummy saber into high guard as Farissa had taught him. This gave him barely enough time to roll out of the way as Jaric lunged at him, swinging his saber with fury of thousand Naxxa. Mir, his tail all puffedup managed to roll out of the way, banging his shoulder against the floor as he did so. As he stood up he found himself on the backside of Master Jaric and swung his weapon at his rear, scoring a glancing blow against his well muscled buttock. Mir was rather happy with himself. One didn't get to poke jedi in the rear every day.
Jaric, infuriated by his lapse returned the favor, lounging on the small farghul who barely managed to fend of the master's blows. For a moment Mir thought that the master wasgoing to make a pair of gloves out of him. Mir's fear and Jaric's skill meant that the poor young ferghul had no time to counter attack, doing his best to avoid getting his senses knocked out of him. Once Jaric tackled Mir, causing him to fly to the other end of the ring. This gave him some time to prepare for the next blow - luckily countering the Jaric's haphazard strike and managing to poke him in the knee while half-dancing, half-prancing out of the harm's way.
Smirking, master Jaric stepped back - his job was done. Whether the student was ready or not, only time could tell.

Re: EVENT: Test of Combat Skill (D2, Mid-Afternoon) [MANDATORY]
Ares stepped up. This was his strongest area. He knew knowledge would be weak, he had to show his merit here. He looked over his options.... a duel with Master Jaric? It seemed fitting to show his growth.
Yet... a fight against a master and a knight? It was difficult, impossible for a mere youngling. Yet he could taste the want, the need to prove himself. Now... who would be his opponent?
He looked his tutor in the eye, nodded to him and turned. "Master Orgus, Knight Farissa. May I try my skills in Juyo against your defenses?" He cracked his neck. "My skills lie n offense, so I feel it would be a poor fit to resist Master Jaric and Knight Corvin."
He stepped into the combat area, his movements adjusted to his opponents. Farissa and Orgus stood on his two sides, hoping to divide his attention, but he saw, and immediately stepped back and sideways, allowing him to keep both in his view. Master Orgus raised his sword in a classic Mynock stance, but Ares was quicker, powering through the precise deflection with a burst of strength, tagging the master. Using his momentum, he danced away from Farissa's attack, the training saber feeling like a jolt of coffee than lightning.
Next he turned his attention to the Pantoran, quickly turning around, and sweeping low, surprising Farissa who was expecting a similar attack than the previous one. She yelped as her shin was attacked, while Ares once again moved away from the brunt of Orgus' thrust.
For his last attempt, he tried once again to power through, but the Jedi were now aware of his antics, and slipped away, both of them tagging the youngling, who let out a growl. Still, he succeeded!

Re: EVENT: Test of Combat Skill (D2, Mid-Afternoon) [MANDATORY]
Zanja's lightsaber skills were not where she wanted them to be. There were moments when everything clicked and her training saber felt like an extension of her quick, agile mind... and then there were all the other moments, when she was just bashing away with a glowing stun stick and trying to get through her exercises by main force. Nevertheless, she'd dedicated enough of her time to lightsaber training over the last several years that choosing the "easy" challenge would feel like a cop-out. She eyed the assembled Masters, scowling a little in thought. I'd never touch Master Orgus, let alone him plus Farissa. Jaric... he'd take me apart even faster. But it's training sabers, and I only have to last until the buzzer. Against Jaric's aggressive, attack-over-defense style, she'd have the best chance of getting a cut in. If she wasn't afraid of a little pain.

Zanja padded forward on her turn and nodded to Master Jaric. She scarcely had time to flick on her training saber--the bluish color and buzzy snap-hiss of ignition a pale shadow of a proper Jedi weapon--and flourish it in a quick salute before they were engaged. Jaric's first blow whacked her on the shoulder and made her whole left arm go numb for a few seconds, but she ignored the threat and ducked in to score a quick, light slash toward his hip. Her next swipe missed Jaric entirely, and she made a split-second decision not to parry the cut she saw coming, but instead to surprise the Master by leaning right into his oncoming blade. The resulting hit would have sliced her right in half if it had come from a real lightsaber... but it didn't, and in turn she grounded the tip of her training saber right in Jaric's solar plexus. Then the bell rang and Zanja staggered back, panting.
She knew the head-on tactics she'd just used would have gotten her killed almost immediately in a real fight. Hardly in the spirit of Shien.
Or was it?
She'd passed, after all. And she'd done it by adapting her actions to her assessment of the situation. You couldn't rush a lightsaber, but you could rush a stunstick, and why shouldn't you? It might be a little backwards, but it had worked.

Fighting against the masters? Woah, woah, woah! O'vala was so distracted by those thoughts that she did not really think on where to place herself. Instead, she had to make sure to not fall over during her flips in a way she had been so often lately.
The miralian youngling went into a flurry, and it was pretty messy. She somehow managed to get her strike off and then kept on swinging. Until at some point she realized that she was swinging with the hilt. "Oh kriff!" she exclaimed before holding out the broken training saber. "How did that happen?"

Silas was a bit disappointed, he hadn't managed to finish his armor in time for the Combat test, a fact that kept him from challenging the hardest level the Master's had set forward. Though maybe he should of been as Brave as Ares, the warrior had seemed to do pretty well too. After some thought, he squared off against Jaric, curious as to the Man's skills.
The match wasn't very interesting to the on goers, Silas had always practiced his defense a bit more then his offense, and it was rather obvious by the results of the contest. He didn't manage to score any hitson the master, despite a couple close calls. He was still standing though, and hardly winded from the looks of it. The only sign of any distress being a slight rise in his pulse.
Even that was gone a few moments after the combat ended though, and he looked fresh enough to challenge someone else with little trouble.

Ares went the hard route so that meant that Byron had to at least try it, if only to show people what not to do. He took his place with the training saber and said, “Alright, now pay attention… this is going to be a master class in what not to do in a lightsaber duel. Master Jaric and Master Corvin, I choose to stand before both of you.”
Byron reached out with his senses to feel the flow of the Force and the Force was unclear of the outcome, probably a fancy way of saying, this was going to be bad. He looked at Corvin, he knew the Master was skilled and aggressive and would probably let the Master take the lead… of course that might be what they wanted him to think…
He developed a flow of events… attack Jaric, make it seem like a bad decision and then use that aggression to his advantage, while keeping Corvin on his heels, he assumed he was the weaker fighter… slight but enough to maybe give him a slight edge to last. Then use the Byron Special to finish the fight and hopefully still be standing…
Byron focused on both duelists as they prepared for the sparring match and as expected Jaric rushed forward with both training sabers blazing, Byron side stepped and used his weapon to deflect as much of the attack as possible but Jaric was just too skilled for such a maneuver and struck an early blow.
Byron took the strike surprising Jarric and grabbed his right arm and twisted him into the air, using the forward momentum of the Master’s attack to send the Juyo Master spinning, although he landed lightly on his feet it gave Byron time to press a slight advantage on Corvin.
Byron and Corvin clashed several times the defense impenetrable, until Byron swept the weaker leg and landed a strike on the war hero. Corvin recovered quickly but Byron had scored a moral victory even if he paid for it with a quick riposte to the chest. Jarric dashed back into the fight and now all three were in the thick of a flashing melee, four training sabers blazing in arcs and circles. Each clash sending sparks as the Masters pushed Byron to his limit.
Corvin saw the opening and struck, Byron smirked and reversed the grip on his lightsaber and attacked behind him while ducking at the last possible moment turning Jaric’s attack into a near death blow on Corvin, if the sabers had been real. Three graves would have been dug that day, Byron impaled by Corvin, Jaric impaled by Byron, and Corvin impaled by Jaric… but it was all just training and all three stood tall.
Byron smiled and said, “Well, I am surprised that even worked.”
OOC: Still standing with 6 strain taken and made two successful attacks.

Re: EVENT: Test of Combat Skill (D2, Mid-Afternoon) [MANDATORY]
Esla didn't like martial exercises but she found herself having some talent for it in training. As much as she wanted to avoid that aspect of being a Jedi, she knew it had to come up eventually but she didn't expect to be facing a Jedi Master prior to her graduation! However, she maintained a calm demeanor when she was called up and made her way up to the centre. She took off her black shawl to reveal a light pink short-sleeved blouse with bell sleeves accompanying her black slacks. Esla secured her gloves on her hands and elegantly took out her training sabre with one hand, posing at the ready before Master Orgus. Her eyes will have to remain trained on him if she was to make it out successfully on this test.
The first strike caught her off-guard, especially considering the strength and imposing stature of her opponent. She didn't quite stagger back but found herself taking a step back to give herself proper footing. Playing defensive wasn't going to be easy if he could overpower her. She circled the Master when she was at the ready against and lunged forward to catch the Jedi Master off-guard this time, using her smaller stature to her advantage for a low strike. However, she wouldn't let the Master off so easily as he did and easily side step before delivering another blow after quickly deflecting his.
After the match was done, she dabbed her forehead and neck with the back of her hand. She gave Master Orgus a deep nod with a hand on her chest as a show of gratitude for the spar.

Taime had decided to go for a little less risky route. He hoped he'd be able to at least show Master Orgus he'd improved. Cool and ready to face his challenge, he stepped into the ring.
However, for all his cool and hopes, all he could do was sit back and try to block the impressively pointed strikes from Master Orgus. Try was the optimal word for his efforts. No matter how fast he moved or when he thought he saw an opening, he could only just barely keep from getting hit worse. He plainly had a great deal to learn more from Master Orgus. The doubt began to creep into him again, as it did sometimes. Maybe he really wasn't supposed to be here. Maybe it was all a mistake.
The doubt sunk its fangs in deep and he fumbled even further, trying desperately to at least not look like a fool.
Finally at the end of it all, he was still standing. However, it didn't feel like much of a victory, no matter what Master Orgus said. He'd seen others do better. He just felt like a pitiable failure. This only meant he'd have to train harder. He was plainly not trying hard enough.
He moved to the side, nodding along to Master Orgus's kind words but not feeling them inside. It was all just pity, he was sure of it.
